Everything you need to know about an Employer of Record

An Employer of Record in the Philippines puts a whole new spin on outsourcing. You already know that outsourcing to the Philippines can save you up to 70% of the cost when hiring locally. However, you still have all the responsibilities of an employer and the associated tax obligations that come with hiring in another country.

The solution is to hire your new employees using an Employer of Record (EOR) in the Philippines. It’s ideal for small to medium size companies that don’t have an HR department of any significant size. It’s also perfect for start-ups that have a limited budget and few resources.

What is an Employer of Record in the Philippines?

An Employer of Record in the Philippines is a third party that hires and manages your new employees. This company manages all the recruitment processes and onboarding of your new staff, and in the case of Outsourced, provides all the resources they need to work full-time for your organisation.

Essentially, an EOR in the Philippines is the employer of your new staff. You can imagine how much time and effort is spent on administrative duties, for example, HR, payroll, sick leave and annual leave and how much you’ll save by not being their formal employer. On top of all this, Outsourced provides a state-of-the-art facility in Manila where your dedicated, full-time employee works. We provide all the infrastructure, computers, software, IT help and fast internet service they require.

Even though Outsourced is the formal employer of your employees in the Philippines, as a leading EOR, we don’t have any managerial or supervisory responsibilities. We just give your remote staff all the resources and support they need to fulfil their role with your company.

Benefits of an EOR in the Philippines

There are three obvious benefits to engaging with an EOY in the Philippines, from reduced employee accountability and compliance monitoring to significant cost savings over both the long and short term.

Reduced employee accountability

Given that the EOR is the formal employer of your new employee, your company has few if any employee responsibilities. All of the duties concerning payroll, healthcare and insurance are performed by the EOR. Your responsibilities lie with managing and supervising their workload, which can easily be performed via phone, email, chat, Zoom or Skype.

Compliance monitoring

Labour and tax laws are complex in any country but trying to be compliant with a foreign country’s equivalent starts to get very complicated, very quickly. This isn’t your problem, however, because the EOR manages all this regulatory compliance for your company.

Cost savings

Engaging with an Employer of Record in the Philippines saves you a significant amount of time and money, otherwise spent on recruiting, hiring, onboarding and training new employees. You also save money because you don’t have to provide all the infrastructure and admin needs of your employees.

How can an EOR help your company?

An EOR in the Philippines ensures that all legal, regulatory and tax requirements for your employees are completed and submitted as necessary. We also provide all the resources they need to work for your company. We comply with all regulations or agreements that cover workers’ rights in the Philippines and provide your company with their employment contracts and any other required paperwork.

Best country for software development outsourcing in Asia

Software development outsourcing to Asia has been growing steadily over the past four decades but has seen rapid growth since the COVID pandemic. With outsourcing costs anything up to 75% lower than hiring locally, Asia is definitely at the forefront of the outsourcing industry.

The problem with outsourcing to Asia, however, is that it consists of 48 countries and three territories, so where do you start? At Outsourced, we’ve done all the work for you, comparing the top six countries in Asia for software development outsourcing: the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Comparisons were made on four essential outsourcing criteria: English proficiency, western cultural similarities, cost savings, and education and intelligence. These were ranked from best to worst with a score of six being the highest and one being the lowest.

English proficiency

English proficiency was based on the EF EPI Proficiency Index 2021 which provides a quantitative and qualitative score (first and second rows in Figure 1, respectively); rankings were allocated according to these scores (shown in bold in the last row of Figure 1).  The higher the score, the greater a county’s English proficiency.

The Philippines tops our list because English was introduced during the US colonial occupation in the early 1900s and has become their second official language.

Western cultural similarities

Comparisons between a country’s national culture and western culture were important because it provides a measure of how easily outsourced employees can collaborate with your in-house team, from a cultural point of view.

The comparative score for western culture was based on the Hofstede Insights Country Comparison and calculated as the average score for Australia, the UK and the US. This average score was then compared to each of the six country’s scores and the differences were ranked (Figure 2). The smaller the difference, the higher the ranking.

Cost savings

For the cost savings expected by companies who outsource their software development to Asia, we used the average base pay per month estimated by Glassdoor in each of the six Asian countries and compared these results with the equivalent salary in the US. This provided the following dollar savings and subsequent scores (Figure 3).

Education and intelligence

Education and intelligence were obtained from three sources: QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings, Education Rankings by Country and World Population Review. The scores for all three criteria were totalled and ranked to provide one single score for education and intelligence.

QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings

This report highlights the nations with the world’s strongest higher education systems. Comparing national performance in four areas, the rankings were based on system strength, access, flagship institution performance, and economic context (Figure 4).

Education Rankings by Country

The Education Rankings by Country are based on the Best Countries Report which surveyed thousands of people across 78 countries. To score the education systems of each country they asked respondents three questions (shown below); the higher the score the greater the ranking (Figure 5).

  • Did the country have a well-developed public education system?
  • Would they consider attending university in the country?
  • Did they believe that the country provides top-quality education?

How technology companies can leverage the metaverse?

What do you know about metaverse outsourcing? For most people, the metaverse is a new concept. In fact, many people might have no idea what you are talking about when you mention the metaverse. On the other hand, for technology companies, the word screams potential – the potential for massive opportunities.

However, to achieve this potential you need to leverage the opportunities offered by metaverse staff outsourcing in the Philippines.

Exploring the opportunities of the metaverse

The metaverse is best described as a fusion between the real world and a virtual world. It’s a digital world with infinite potential where people can interact using avatars. It’s the next itineration of the internet, an evolution that’s likely to see the rise of online 3D environments, resulting in access to a meld of virtual reality and augmented reality experiences.

Users can visit new locations, interact with educational packages, connect and conduct business, all whilst existing in an immersive, but digital environment. Mark Zuckerberg has recognised the potential of the metaverse, even going so far as renaming his company Meta Platforms and investing in building the world’s fastest AI supercomputer to achieve his goals.

Gaming companies are already building environments in the metaverse, Nike and H&M have purchased marketplaces, and Facebook and Microsoft are positioning themselves as venders to service tech companies. As more and more companies begin trading in the metaverse, the need for metaverse outsourcing will become even more vital, particularly for tech companies.

There are already opportunities for the gaming and VR/AR industries in the metaverse. For example people are already buying virtual fashion, game accessories and even virtual real estate, using NFTs (non-fungible tokens). You can build fully immersive environments or new worlds, host concerts or invest in new forms of entertainment and extended reality experiences. The metaverse opportunities are truly endless.
