About the Client We are a precision custom machine shop dedicated to delivering high-quality manufactured components across diverse industries. We combine advanced CNC technologies, rigorous process control, and an integrated ERP workflow to produce dependable, repeatable solutions for our clients.
Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented
CAM Programmer (CNC Programmer) to join our team in a remote capacity.
In this role, you will convert customer 2D drawings and 3D STEP models into robust, proven, and repeatable CNC programs. You will serve as a technical bridge connecting our office estimating workflow and shop-floor execution:
- Supporting Quoting: Providing accurate tool lists, CAM programs, and estimated cycle/operation times so the Production Coordinator can quote projects accurately.
- Supporting Manufacturing: Delivering post-processed programs, detailed setup sheets, and live prove-out support to ensure parts run safely and correctly on the very first piece.
Key Responsibilities 1. Quoting & Process Planning - Review incoming quote opportunities, including quantities, material specs, drawings, 3D STEP models, and sales notes.
- Select the optimal machine setup and sequence to minimize operations, cycle time, and handling.
- Program CNC lathes (live tooling, C and Y axes) and CNC mills (3-axis, 3+2, and multi-axis) using MasterCam.
- Determine fixturing strategies (standard workholding vs. custom jigs) and generate CAD models for custom fixtures/jigs when required.
- Identify specialized tooling needs, select vendors/specs, and create product entries in Odoo ERP; utilize standard shop tooling whenever possible.
- Update Bills of Materials (BOMs), routing steps, operation times, and tooling lists in Odoo to finalize customer quotes.
- Perform manufacturability assessments by proactively flagging design, fixturing, tolerance, or material challenges before quotes are submitted.
2. Production Support & Shop Collaboration - Generate and verify post-processed G-code for designated machines and CNC controls.
- Produce comprehensive setup documentation, tool sheets, and operation notes for machinists.
- Collaborate remotely with the Foreman and Machinists during first-piece prove-out, quickly turning around program adjustments or feed/speed optimizations.
- Ensure all programs, tool lists, and cycle times align precisely with current engineering drawing revisions.
- Coordinate with Quality Control (QC) whenever toolpath or datum revisions impact inspection parameters or part tolerances.
3. Revision Control & ERP Program Management - Maintain an organized, centralized program library within Odoo ERP, ensuring programs, setup sheets, and run times are linked to each specific production order.
- Track revision histories, logging specific changes and the rationale for each update.
- Ensure that only the current, approved, and proven revision is active on the production floor.
- Archive final proven programs, tool sheets, and times in the ERP upon job completion.
4. Continuous Improvement & Team Integration - Standardize tool, holder, and fixture libraries; establish baseline cutting parameters across common shop materials.
- Recommend modern tooling, fixturing techniques, or capital equipment purchases to reduce cycle times and expand machining capabilities.
- Participate in daily morning production meetings to report on quoting queues, active jobs, and completed programs.
- Document workflows and cross-train a backup team member on CAM processes to ensure operational continuity.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) - Quoting Turnaround: Complete quote programming within 2 business days.
- On-Time Program Delivery: 100% of programs and setup sheets finalized prior to scheduled job release.
- First-Piece Success Rate: 80% or higher first-piece runs proven out without program revisions.
- Revision Integrity: 100% adherence to drawing revisions and ERP production record updates.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required: - Experience: 3+ years of hands-on CNC programming experience for mills and/or lathes within a job-shop or similar environment.
- CAM Software: Strong working knowledge of MasterCam (toolpaths, post-processing, and 3D model work from STEP files).
- Machine Competency:
- CNC Lathes: Live tooling, C-axis, and Y-axis programming.
- CNC Mills: 3-axis, 3+2, and multi-axis milling.
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and part tolerances.
- Solid knowledge of cutting tools, speeds and feeds, workholding, and a range of materials.
- Strong foundation in shop math and CNC control G-code for edits at the machine.
- Remote Collaboration: Proven ability to troubleshoot and collaborate effectively with shop-floor machinists and foremen via digital communication channels.
Preferred / Assets: - CAD capability for designing custom jigs and fixtures.
- Hands-on experience utilizing an ERP system such as Odoo (managing products, BOMs, and work orders).
Work Environment & Technical Requirements - Location: 100% Remote / Work from Home. Occasional visits to the Red Deer County facility may occur (standard shop safety rules apply).
- Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 9AM - 5PM PHT
- Workstation: Candidate must have a dedicated, reliable computer, MasterCam access, and a secure connection to the ERP.
- Flexibility: Fast turnaround may occasionally be required for urgent first-piece prove-outs or time-sensitive quote requests.
